APS Medical Leave

APS Medical Leaves of Absence

  • To be eligible for an APS extended leave of absence, an employee must have worked for APS a minimum of one contract year immediately prior to the leave start date
  • The APS Employee Handbook, ATF, AEAA, ASCA, EPOA, CWA M&O, and CWA Food Services negotiated agreements allow for an extended medical leave for up to one year.
  • This type leave is for employees not eligible for an FMLA Leave.
  • This type of leave is for a consecutive period of time, not an intermittent leave.

Applying for Medical Leave

Substitution of Paid Leave

  • APS requires employees to substitute or use paid leave while on an APS Medical Leave of Absence. Once all balances of sick, personal, and annual leave are exhausted, the remaining time will be unpaid
  • Use of compensatory time is not allowed.

Returning to Work

  • To facilitate your return to work, provide the Leaves Office with advance notification of your intended return date (Letter of Intent).  Failure to do so may delay your return date and/or may result in termination of employment.
  • A Medical Clearance is required before the employee will be permitted to return to work.
  • Call the Leaves Department to schedule your afternoon reinstatement appointment at least one week prior to your return to work date.
  • If returning early from leave, the supervisor's written approval must be provided to the Leaves Office.  It is the employee's responsibility to notify the supervisor of the requested early return date.
