Student Teachers

APS District Requirements for Student Teachers:

  1. Be in good academic standing and complete all university/college requirements for student teaching
  2. Complete the online APS Student Teacher Application through Winocular:
    1. Go to APS Jobs.
    2. Click "Browse Job Postings."
    3. Open the Job Type dropdown.
    4. Select "Student Teaching."
    5. Click the Student Teacher link under the "Job Title" column.
  3. Be cleared through the APS Background/Fingerprint Office
Our Fingerprinting and Background Office is currently transitioning to a new fingerprinting and background service, IDEMIA. The fee is now $59.00, please follow the instructions below to obtain clearance to student teach at APS.
  1. Obtain the Authorization to Student Teach form from the university.
  2. Schedule a new appointment at IdenttoGO.
  3. Enter Albuquerque Public Schools ORI Number NM930002Z 
  4. Register by completing the required fields for applicant information and paying the fee of $59.00
  5. Make sure to print a copy of your registration receipt and bring it to your fingerprinting appointment.
  6. Call the APS Fingerprinting and Background Office at 505-884-9368 to schedule an appointment to complete paperwork and provide a copy of a valid government-issued ID. (APS is appointment-based only. WALK-INS will be turned away.)
  7.  Once cleared, the "Authorization to Student Teach Form" must be presented to school administration prior to starting the student teaching field experience or reporting to any school assignment.
  • If you have not received a clearance via e-mail within 7-10 business days, please contact Marissa Sanchez at (505) 889-4862.

Should any problems arise, the cooperating teacher should first contact the designated school administrator who, in turn, should contact the university director or coordinator for assistance as needed.

Field Observations:

Observations may be requested by inquiring with a selected campus and seeking the approval of the campus administrator. All observers must follow the same process as the student teachers to obtain clearance through the APS Background/Fingerprint Office, prior to reporting to any district campus assignment.


Substituting During Student Teaching Field Experience

  • If permitted by the attending university/college, student teachers (not observers) may substitute for their mentor teachers only.
  • Student teachers may not substitute for more than 10 days for their mentor teacher without permission from the college and the Kelly Education Services.
  • To register as a substitute, student teachers should contact Kelly Education Services to initiate the process.
  • Should the student teacher desire to continue substituting after completing his/her student teaching field experience (i.e. if the period of student teaching stipulated by the college program ends before the public school term ends), the student teacher must follow the appropriate application procedure to become an Albuquerque Public Schools’ employee.
