Principals

Each school year, Albuquerque Public Schools partners with local colleges to provide observation and teaching opportunities in the public school setting to students in post-secondary education programs.

In order to ensure consistency in the program as well as to ensure the safety of your students, these student teachers must follow a set protocol to gain access to your school. You will find information in this section regarding procedures.

Cooperating teachers play an important role in the development and success of student teachers.  Cooperating teachers should not only be highly effective in the classroom but they should also be mentors and leaders within the school and/or community.  Principals are encouraged to identify and inspire highly qualified teachers to apply for cooperating teacher opportunities.

The following are some of the most important points you need to know:

  • Each student observer/teacher must present a signed and dated authorization to student teacher form to you.
  • Student teachers (not observers) are allowed to substitute for their mentor teachers only.
  • Student teachers may not substitute for more than 10 days for their mentor teacher without permission from the college and Kelly Education Services.
  • If the student teacher wishes to continue substituting when his/her program’s terms of student teaching are not in effect (i.e. if the period of student teaching stipulated by the college program ends before the public school term ends), the student teacher must follow the appropriate application procedure to become a Kelly Education Services employee.
