COEHS Special Education Teacher Training (SETT) Program

UNM SETT is a partnership between the Albuquerque Public Schools, Albuquerque Teacher’s Federation, and the University of New Mexico (UNM) to train highly qualified special educators. Teaching students with disabilities is a deeply fulfilling and impactful career that is in high demand. Our vision is to facilitate the development of supportive, effective, and culturally responsive environments for individuals with disabilities and their families. We seek individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences to contribute to this growing field.

The UNM SETT residents receive full level 1 teacher salaries and benefits. As a Resident teacher, you will co-teach with an experienced teacher four days a week and attend University classes one day a week. The majority of the coursework credits can count towards a Special Education Master's degree.

After co-teaching for a year, teacher residents will teach in their own classroom with continued mentorship, coaching, and support during the first two years of teaching.

Special Education Teacher Training at CNM

The Special Education Teacher Training (SETT) program is a collaboration between Albuquerque Public Schools (APS), Central New Mexico Community College (CNM), and the Albuquerque Teachers Federation (ATF) to provide a supported alternative licensure pathway to attract and retain high quality special education teachers in APS.

The SETT Residency program provides new special education teachers the opportunity to co-teach with an experienced teacher for a year while taking academic coursework for PreK–12 special education licensure one day a week.

Teacher Residents in the SETT co-teach for a full school year while earning a first-year teacher's salary and benefits. Classroom teaching is supported with rigorous coursework in the foundations of special education. Topics include: curriculum and assessment, classroom and individual behavior management, and literacy instruction. Residents will also complete coursework for a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) endorsement.

After co-teaching in the fall, teacher candidates will teach in their own classroom with continued mentorship, coaching, and support during the first two years of teaching.
