Gifted Education

A brief explanation of Gifted Education in New Mexico.

In the state of New Mexico, gifted education falls under the Special Education Department. Students are identified through a referral and evaluation process.

As described in the New Mexico Public Education Department Gifted Education Technical Assistance Manual, a “gifted child” means a school-age person whose intellectual ability, aptitude/achievement, creativity/divergent thinking, problem-solving/critical thinking, artistic abilities or leadership abilities meet the eligibility criteria in the New Mexico Administrative Code and for whom a properly constituted IEP team determines that special education services are required to meet the child’s educational needs.

Programs are developed for each student through the Gifted Individualized Education Program (G.I.E.P.). Gifted services are provided through a variety of  models.
