Transition Outcomes Coffee Shop

2026 Best in Class runner-up.

Transition Coffee Shop

The Transition Outcomes Coffee Shop Program launched in the 2023 - 2024 school year with a clear vision: to provide students with special needs meaningful, hands-on vocational experience through authentic, on-the-job learning in a real workplace setting. What started with a single Keurig quickly evolved into a dynamic learning environment that focused on independence, confidence, and employability skills, while providing students the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications in ServSafe, OSHA 10, and customer service.

In its first year, students mastered foundational workplace skills such as taking orders, handling money, delivering customer service, maintaining cleanliness, and following step-by-step procedures. As interest and skills increased, the program expanded to include two touch-screen machines with picture-based drink selections. These machines allow students of varying abilities to independently follow visual prompts and consistently prepare high-quality beverages.

In December 2024, grant funding allowed for the upgrade of machines and a point-of-sale system for real-world payment processing and cash management. In 2025–2026, an espresso machine was added, introducing advanced barista skills and specialty drinks.

Beyond daily operations, the program strives to engage with the broader school community through pop-up coffee events at special school district gatherings and partner programs. These events provide authentic opportunities to practice customer interaction, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability in busy environments.

Today, the Transition Outcomes Coffee Shop Program stands as a growing, student-centered enterprise focused on real-world application—empowering students with practical job skills, fostering independence, and preparing them for successful post-secondary employment opportunities.

The Transition Coffee Shop Program envisions a student-led enterprise where learners develop the skills, confidence, and industry credentials needed for meaningful, competitive employment. Through hands-on experience in customer service, beverage preparation, workplace safety, and financial literacy, students graduate prepared to thrive in hospitality and service industries. The program fosters independence, highlights student abilities, and strengthens school and community connections through pop-up events and partnerships.

We hope to fund a new Point of Sale system with enhanced credit card access and an additional espresso machine, expanding advanced barista training. Students develop vocational skills—precision, time management, multitasking, customer communication, and quality control—that directly translate to competitive employment. They gain confidence, independence, and transferable job skills while mastering craft beverages and professional service standards.

Our long-term vision is a mobile coffee truck, allowing students to engage with communities, participate in district-wide events, and gain authentic real-world experience while showcasing their skills and success.
