Middle school recognition program

The APS Education Foundation Board is thrilled to announce the launch of our newest initiative, the APS Rising Stars Middle School Recognition Program. Driven by the Board's vision and established as a key pillar of the Foundation's Strategic Plan, this pilot program will debut during the 2026-2027 school year.

APS Rising Stars will honor one outstanding 8th grade student from each middle school who embodies the core values of resilience, growth, character, kindness, and positive community impact. Stay tuned for more details as we prepare to honor the bright future of APS!

Important Dates to Remember

• Aug. 31, 2026: Nominations officially open
• Sep. 25, 2026: Nominations close
• Dec. 11, 2026: Inaugural recognition luncheon

2026-2027 Selection Criteria

One 8th Grade Representative Per School. The APS Rising Stars Middle School Recognition Program will honor one 8th grade student per middle school during the 2026–2027 school year. Students selected next year will be current 7th graders who demonstrate strong character, leadership, growth, and positive impact within their school community. 

An APS Rising Star must:

• Be currently enrolled in 7th grade (2025–2026 school year).
• Will be enrolled as an 8th grader in 2026–2027.
• Be in good academic and behavioral standing.
• Demonstrate consistent positive contribution to school culture. 

Core Selection Criteria

The selected student should consistently demonstrate excellence in the following areas: 

• Resilience & Growth: Shows perseverance when faced with challenges; demonstrates measurable academic or personal growth; maintains effort and determination.
• Character & Integrity: Honest, trustworthy, and dependable; takes responsibility for actions; demonstrates maturity and strong decision-making.
• Leadership & Initiative: Serves as a positive role model for peers; encourages others and contributes to a positive school climate; takes initiative in academics, clubs, athletics, or service.
• Kindness & Empathy: Treats others with respect and inclusivity; promotes a safe and welcoming environment; handles conflict constructively.
• School & Community Impact: Participates in extracurricular activities, leadership, or service; contributes meaningfully to their campus; demonstrates pride in representing their school. 

When selecting a representative, please note: 

• Program Intent. This recognition aims to highlight outstanding middle school leadership, celebrate students who reflect APS values, inspire younger students, and elevate positive culture across APS middle schools.
• All nominations are submitted to APS Education Foundation before the deadline
• Schools are to create a selection committee consisting of at least 5 staff (teachers, administrators and guidance counselors etc…) and determine which RISING STAR will be recognized from their school
• A rubric aligned to the above criteria is recommended to ensure equity and consistency.
• Only one student per school will be selected.
• Nominations that include specific examples of impact and leadership highly preferred.
