Albuquerque High School: Jewelry Uplift
2026 Best in Class finalist.
When Jewelry Uplift began five years ago, the vision was clear: transform the AHS jewelry room into a state- of-the-art jewelry and small metals studio that improved efficiency, productivity, and safety, while building community through free, multigenerational Jewelry Uplift classes. Jewelry Uplift tells the story of how hard work and heart work, grounded in a sustainable vision and planning, can transform a classroom and elevate student outcomes. An active jewelry studio addresses far more than technical skills; it supports identity-driven learning, inquiry, social-emotional growth, and meaningful connections to school and community. At Albuquerque High School, jewelry students understand that their voices matter and that they are part of the decision-making process. Jewelry Uplift and the AHS jewelry program reflect APS Goal 4 competencies— Perseverance, Self-Regulation, Self-Efficacy, and Social Awareness—while fostering a culture rooted in empathy, stability, innovation, and curiosity. Together, we continually refine and strengthen the curriculum in a nurturing, student-centered environment.
Today, students work in professional-level spaces with industry-standard equipment and tools. Professional jewelers, college instructors, and leaders from local arts organizations regularly engage with students, creating a vibrant atmosphere of mentorship and inspiration. Our current focus centers on college and career readiness, strengthening connections to New Mexico colleges, and expanding pathways to meaningful careers in the jewelry industry.
Jewelry Uplift is more than a class; it is a hands-on learning experience that extends beyond traditional instruction. Students build technical jewelry-making skills while strengthening creativity, problem-solving abilities, and confidence. Through community partnerships, mentorship, workshops, and professional experiences, they gain real-world exposure that supports college and career readiness. Rooted in New Mexico’s rich jewelry traditions, our program honors cultural heritage while introducing contemporary techniques and global perspectives.
We will expand this impact through two jewelry-focused field trips centered on college and career exploration, allowing students to visit postsecondary programs and industry settings. We will also host three hands-on workshops led by guest artists and professionals, providing mentorship and insight into current practices. Funding will further support essential tools and materials from our community partner, ensuring students continue to learn in a rigorous, industry-standard environment that prepares them for meaningful futures.
