Background Checks for Prospective Volunteers

Background checks for potential volunteers are based on database searches of criminal records, Departments of Correction records, sex offender registries, and driving records. Volunteers are authorized based on satisfactory background check results.

Unsupervised School Volunteers

Unsupervised School Volunteers have unsupervised access to student.

  • If your volunteer role requires unsupervised access to children, including unsupervised access to students during field trips, you will need an Unsupervised School Volunteer Full FBI Fingerprint clearance initiated by the principal or the principal's designee.
  • Please contact your school's volunteer coordinator, clerk or principal to initiate this type of clearance. If you are an agency provider or other entity, please e-mail  for Unsupervised Volunteer Clearance information.
  • Please do not make an appointment to be fingerprinted until you have received e-mail instructions from APS to do so.

 Supervised Volunteers

To apply to volunteer and complete your supervised background check, complete an online application.

APS background checks are valid for 2 years. If you have completed an APS background check within the last 2 years, you do not need to complete an application at this time.

  1. Cost for a background check to become a volunteer is $12. Payment will be requested within the application through PayPal.
  2. Background checks will be conducted based on the information provided within the application.
  3. The clearance will be communicated directly to the applicant within 10 days of application submission. Schools/coordinators do not receive this information.

Parents Without a Social Security Number

If you do not have a Social Security Number for your online volunteer application, please contact APS Applicant Processing at (505) 889-4820 and they will assist you with an alternative number.
