What is the HST (formerly GED)?

 The High School Equivalency Exam (HST) Test Battery is a national examination developed by the GED Testing Service of the American Council on Education (ACE).

How it Works

Existing APS Students

  1. First, you must withdraw from high school.
  2. Then, the student and parent/guardian come in to the APS Service Center (map to the Service Center) with the following:
    • withdrawal paperwork from your school
    • your birth certificate
  3. If your paperwork is approved, APS will issue you a "New Mexico Underage Permission Hardship Form" provided by the State of New Mexico.
  4. Then, go to a HST Testing Center in Albuquerque (typically in person) to pre-register for the test. Search for a testing center near you or call one of the following centers in Albuquerque:

Students Living Outside the APS Attendance Area

Please contact your school district for information on earning a HST.

Out of State Students

You will be required to show proof that your parent(s) now live within the APS attendance area. Bring proof of address such as a driver's license or lease agreement. Questions? Contact the Student Service Center Office at 855-9040.

Charter School Students

Note that APS does not process the HST for Charter Schools. Please contact your Charter School administration for more information.

Homeschooled Students

Please go directly to a HST Testing Center for the "NM Underage Permission Hardship Form" and to learn more about taking the HST.

Age Requirements

The student seeking a HST must be at least 16 years old.  Students that have reached the age of 18 can contact the test site directly.
