Biography:

Johanna King began her career as a newspaper reporter before moving into education, where she spent over ten years as a high school journalism teacher, advising both newspaper and yearbook. That foundation in storytelling and truth-telling made for a natural transition into district communications, a field where she built extensive experience and lasting impact.

An early innovator, Ms. King led APS into the digital age when many school districts were still hesitant to embrace it. She launched the district’s social media presence—first on Facebook, then on Twitter and Instagram—making APS a role model for how schools could use these platforms to engage families and communities. She also created digital newsletters for families and employees and helped modernize the district website so that both good news and critical information were accessible, clear, and easy to understand.

As APS shifted to a new governance model focused on student outcomes, Ms. King moved into Board Services and later served as chief of staff to newly hired Superintendent Dr. Gabriella Blakey. After a year in that role, she returned to her strength as Chief Communications Officer, where she continues to help guide the district’s messaging and community engagement.
