- Assistant Superintendents of Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, High Schools, and Magnet Schools
Biography
Dr. Randy Mahlerwein, whose nearly three-decade career in education is marked by a push for innovation, joins Albuquerque Public Schools as its Deputy Superintendent for Leadership and Learning.
Dr. Mahlerwein comes to APS from Mesa, Ariz., where he was the assistant superintendent of Secondary Schools at Mesa Public Schools, the state’s largest district.
Dr. Mahlerwein led the implementation of college and career academies across multiple high schools in Mesa, partnering with some of the largest private firms in Arizona and the nation, including Honeywell, Boeing and Empire CAT.
Dr. Mahlerwein will help lead APS’ move to redesign its middle and high school experiences, notably the New Education Workforce Initiative being pioneered at six district middle schools, and the Academies of Albuquerque, which begins in August 2025 at Cibola, Manzano and Highland high schools.
Dr. Mahlerwein is married with two school-age children. He holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and two master’s degrees from Northern Arizona University and a bachelor’s degree from Miami (Ohio) University.
