The Black Student Union (BSU)

The Black Student Union (BSU) serves as a vital, unified organization dedicated to fostering solidarity among African American students, while also empowering them with a profound sense of belonging and opportunities for prosperity.

Originating in the 1960s during a tumultuous era marked by profound racial inequalities, the BSU emerged as a proactive response to the pervasive challenges and injustices faced by African Americans. Its formation is intended not only to address these inequities head-on but also to cultivate a supportive community that promotes resilience and equality among the ongoing struggles against racial discrimination.

Today, the BSU continues to play a pivotal role in advocating for social justice and strengthening the voices of African American students within educational institutions and broader society. The Office of Equity and Engagement actively supports BSU sponsors in creating and maintaining a culturally sensitive and safe environment where students can confidently advocate, learn, and inspire for meaningful change.
