How do I discard outdated instructional materials?

First, determine what is outdated and what you need to discard. Each school is responsible for reviewing materials for disposal eligibility. No materials under the current State adoption cycle can be disposed of unless they are damaged beyond repair; if current materials are damaged and need to be discarded, this should be noted on the paperwork.

To check for disposal eligibility, you can go to www.istaronline.com (username: nmguest / password: nmguest) and search for each ISBN. If ISBNs are listed as either Yes, Core or Yes, Supplemental under the Adopted column, those materials are not eligible for discard unless damaged beyond repair.

You can also use our new tool, the Instructional Materials Informational Google Site. This site lists the current district-supported core programs for APS. If a program is not listed on this site, it is not a current district-supported core program. If a program is moving from being current to being not current, there will be information on the google site letting you know this.

Next, complete some paperwork - each school or department must complete the two following forms:

1. The textbook disposal spreadsheet

  • This form is where you record what you are discarding, and how many of each title you have to discard. You do not need to complete this form for consumables.

2. and the principal verification form

Once the paperwork has been completed, email your forms to Sara Sabol ().

After the paperwork has been completed, you may offer discarded instructional materials to students and your community.

Then, box your outdated instructional materials. Label the boxes "discard."

Finally, responsibly recycle your boxed outdated instructional materials, typically in your school recycling dumpster.
