Programs of Study

Learn about programs of study available at high schools in APS.

A Program of Study (POS) is a sequence of courses connecting secondary and postsecondary education leading to a career. The components of a POS are:

  • a specific sequence of courses including a clear connection to a post-secondary program
  • association in a career technical education student organization (CTSO)
  • worksite training experience (student internship, job shadowing, or pre-apprenticeship while in high school)

The idea is to increase relevance and rigor of current education for a student as it relates to future career goals whether it be going straight into the workforce following graduation from high school, going into the military, or attending a post-secondary institution of either a 2-year or 4-year college.  The student becomes more informed about their career choices and the educational needs of pursuing a career path of choice.

Therefore, if a student knows that his/her future career will be engineering he/she knows that their high school education should include at least four years of math including algebra 1 & 2, geometry and trigonometry.  Further, a student will need to take at least three lab sciences of which should include biology, chemistry, and physics. In the same notion, a student intending to become a chef understands that they need a clear understanding of math and science, including algebra 1 & 2 as well as biology and chemistry.  Students through work site training will learn that the better they do in high school, the more likely they will be successful in obtaining their desired career in the future.

A POS emphasizes a strong alignment with post-secondary institutions.  This effort includes aligning high school course through the articulation of courses with post-secondary education or dual credit opportunities.  In both cases, students begin the exploration of post-secondary education at the same time earning both high school and college credit.   Students who are focused can earn an Associates Degree at the same time earning a high school diploma.  At this time, APS has articulation agreements with Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) and has strengthened it’s dual credit programs with the use of Perkins IV funding.  Further, a POS strengthens the relationships between career and core academic courses providing a meaningful education for students.  Where instruction in core academic courses teach concepts while career technical education courses provide a student with an opportunity to apply academic knowledge learned.
