The APS Content Management System

Albuquerque Public Schools uses a content management system (CMS) to ensure a consistent user experience, rich content, and easy access to the information the APS community is seeking.

Web Content Policy

Albuquerque Public Schools shall maintain a website to serve as the primary informational platform for the district to communicate district and school information to students, families and the community.

Albuquerque Public Schools is committed to supporting an online environment that is accessible to those with disabilities. APS will make continuous efforts to provide online information that complies with online accessibility guidelines unless doing so creates a fundamental alteration or an undue burden on the provider. In these circumstances, the content and functionality may be made available to users on request in an equally effective and accessible alternative manner.

Benefits of the APS Content Management System

Search engine-friendly

The CMS helps to optimize your website so that search engine users can easily find your information.

Quick and easy page management

  • WYSIWYG editor: A “What You See is What You Get” editor allows users to easily edit content using a Microsoft Word style interface. Users edit content in a form that resembles the finished product.
  • Scheduled publishing: Content can be set to automatically publish (go live) or expire at a given date and time.
  • News and events: Allows departments to highlight new or time-sensitive information about their department. Editors can schedule news and events can be set to publish and expire automatically, which helps departments keep their content up to date.
  • URL redirects and aliasing: Allows for APS-branded URLs for any webpage.
  • WCAG 2.0 Compliant: The page templates are designed to be compliant for accessibility. At the same time, content editors and administrators still need to follow accessibility guidelines to ensure their content is compliant.

Translated Page Content

Your website content is easily translated. Albuquerque Public Schools provides two built-in tools to provide a site-wide translation of web content on and school websites.

Consistent brand and navigation

  • Templates: Standardized templates provide a consistent brand image and navigation across the district website.
  • Responsive design: Pages in the CMS are viewable on any device. The CMS automatically scales your site to fit tablets, mobile devices, and smaller browser windows.

Archive capabilities

  • You can track who has made changes to your page and archive previous versions of your page.
  • Versions are saved of every published draft including an audit log, allowing content managers to revert to previous versions if needed.

User Roles and Security

  • User Roles: Different levels of access can be given to different users. This feature allows site managers to distribute the work of keeping the content updated.
  • Workflows: An integrated workflow process for reviewing and approving content.
  • APS Active Directory: Once you are assigned permissions by a site administrator, you can log in with your APS e-number and password to manage your website and content.
  • Security: Plone has the best track record in security of any major CMS and provides a myriad of options for security at all levels.

A cache stores recently accessed information in a place where it can be accessed extremely fast without needing to regenerate the content.

Content Type

Content types define what constitutes a piece of content. Some examples include a general content page, departmental page, and web form.​


An authenticated APS user who has the ability to add or edit content and submit it for review, but not publish.


An unpublished piece of content not yet ready for publication.


An authenticated APS user who has the ability to add, edit, delete, approve, and publish content.

Form Folder

A content type that allows Site Administrators to easily create forms for email and/or database submission.


  • Left Navigation: Secondary navigation specific to department sites that appears left of department web content.
  • Main Navigation: Navigation bar appearing directly below the site title.

Needs Review

An unpublished piece of content that has been flagged for review to be published.


The software that runs the APS content management system (CMS).


A published/live piece of content that is available to site visitors.

Responsive Design

The approach that suggests that design and development should respond to the user's behavior and environment based on screen size, platform, and orientation. For example, automatically adapting to mobile devices. 

Site Administrator

An authenticated APS user who has site configuration and setup ability, as well as all other content authoring rights.


The page summary displays as bold text between the page title and main body text area, and is used for search results for the page. The summary should be 2 sentences or less, and should highlight the information on the page.


Keywords that allow content managers to categorize/group content data.

URL Alias and Redirect

An alias is a URL that points directly to a page on a website. A redirect is a URL that redirects to another web page.

WCAG 2.0

The international standard for web content, including procurement requirements, complaints, and lawsuits. The guidelines are an important tool for measuring and understanding the accessibility of online content. For more information, refer to Accessibility at APS.
