Home School
The Student Service Center provides information about transferring a student out of an APS school in order to establish a home school site.
Homeschooling is the education of children at home (typically by parents), rather than in a formal public or private school setting.
How to Set Up a Home School
The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) oversees homeschooling programs.
If you're interested in homeschooling your children, call the NMPED Home Schools Office at (505) 827-6909 or visit the NMPED Home School Office website for more information.
When setting up a Home School site, parents or tutors are required to provide all the teaching materials and curriculum for students. APS does not provide assistance to students who are being homeschooled.
Participating in After-School Activities
Homeschooled students can participate in certain extra-curricular activities, clubs, and sports through their local APS middle and high schools. Contact the activities director at the school for more information about available activities and eligibility.
Transferring from Home School to APS
All students transferring from a Home School into the Albuquerque Public Schools district will have to enroll in the school assigned by their address. Go to the Enrollment page for more information
Kindergarten through 8th Grade
Students transferring from a home school program into an APS school will be placed in the grade-appropriate to their age. After a six-week observation period, a parent/teacher conference will be scheduled to discuss the student's placement and make any needed adjustments.
9th through 12th Grade
Contact the Home School office at (505) 855-9040 for information about transferring students into an APS school.
Family School
Parents planning on transitioning their students back into public schools can look into enrolling their child into Coyote Willow Family School or Desert Willow Family School.
The Family Schools are an alternative K–8 program offered through APS. Students attend a public school program that combines a half-day or 80% of classroom instruction with a half-day or 20% of home-based instruction. This helps parents and students take active roles in their educational process and also provides support for students transitioning into public schools.
