Chaperone Letter

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Your child's class will be visiting the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center (SMNHC) in Cedar Crest for a one-day Ecology Field Program. To ensure a successful trip, your child’s teacher needs adult chaperones to accompany the class. If you are available, your assistance would be appreciated.

The chaperones and teacher accompany the class for the entire hike and during all activities, both of which are led by an SMNHC instructor. The hike is approximately two miles and will have many rocky areas and steep sections.

Chaperones must be willing to adhere to the following:

  • Parent chaperones are considered school volunteers and must have completed a background check.
  • Chaperones must be on time. Those who arrive more than 30 minutes late will not be allowed to join the hike.
  • Chaperones must be capable of hiking the entire distance. The hike (with stops for learning) may last up to 3 hours and include steep, rocky terrain over 7000 feet in elevation.
  • Siblings and pets are not allowed to attend.

For liability reasons, a teacher must always be with the group. In the event a student becomes ill, a chaperone may be asked to watch that child until other arrangements can be made. If you would like to share this experience with your child, have an opportunity to learn about the natural history of the Sandias, and spend the day hiking in the mountains, please sign the bottom portion of this letter and return it to your child's teacher.

Estimados padres, madres o tutores legales:
