K-8 NMPED Summer Reading Program

APS has partnered with the NM State Public Education Department for the 2025 NM Summer Reading Program. This will provide free structured literacy instruction to all APS, Charter, Private, and Home School incoming Kindergarten through 8th grade students.

What is Summer Reading Program?

New Mexico’s Summer Reading Program is an innovative free program set to empower students from incoming kindergarteners to outgoing eighth graders with focused reading instruction in small groups with trained literacy instructors. This program is being offered free to New Mexico families because reading interventions work. Students who receive focused instruction can get caught up in important reading skills and gain the confidence they need to be successful in all school subjects. Our goals are simple: enhance literacy, track reading progress, and boost confidence and skills in literacy.

When is Summer Reading Program?

  • Program Dates: June 2, 2025 - June 27, 2025 (No school on Juneteenth, June 19)
  • Times: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. -  The Summer Reading Program is 4 hours and each school will have 2 hours of Enrichment Activities to fill the day.
Attendance Policy: All students are required to attend the entire 4 weeks of the program. If a student has missed more than 2 days they will be disenrolled.  This includes consistent late arrivals and early pick up. The student’s Attendance is crucial for this program as we have implemented multiple literacy components that students work on each day.  If a student has missed part or full day of the program it is significantly more difficult for the student to participate.

Registration is now open for the 2025 Summer Reading Program.  Please click here to register your K-8 grade student.  APS deadline for summer registration is May 9,2025. For questions or concerns regarding your student's registration please email NMPED at literacy.nm@state.nm.us. This year APS will NOT have the Summer Learning Adventure ONLY the Summer Reading Program.

This year families can choose any of the schools off the list to attend. NMPED will not have feeder schools this summer.  All APS, Charter, Private, and Home School incoming Kindergarten through 8th grade students are eligible.
