K-8 NMPED Summer Reading Program

APS has partnered with the NM State Public Education Department for the 2025 NM Summer Reading Program. This will provide free structured literacy instruction to all APS, Charter, Private, and Home School incoming Kindergarten through 8th grade students.

What is Summer Reading Program?

New Mexico’s Summer Reading Program is an innovative free program set to empower students from incoming kindergarteners to outgoing eighth graders with focused reading instruction in small groups with trained literacy instructors. This program is being offered free to New Mexico families because reading interventions work. Students who receive focused instruction can get caught up in important reading skills and gain the confidence they need to be successful in all school subjects. Our goals are simple: enhance literacy, track reading progress, and boost confidence and skills in literacy.

When is Summer Reading Program?

  • June - Program Dates: June 2, 2025 - June 27, 2025 (No school on Juneteenth, June 19)
  • June - Times: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. -  The Summer Reading Program is 4 hours and each school will have 2 hours of Enrichment Activities to fill the day.
  • July - Program Dates:  July 7 - 25, 2025 Monday - Friday Times: 8:00 am - 12:00 pm (Enrichment will NOT be offered in July.)
Attendance Policy: All students are required to attend the entire 4 weeks of the program.  This includes consistent late arrivals and early pick up. The student’s Attendance is crucial for this program as we have implemented multiple literacy components that students work on each day.  If a student has missed part or full day of the program it is significantly more difficult for the student to participate.

As of Friday May 23rd Albuquerque Public Schools has closed student registration for June at all sites.

Registration is now open for the July 2025 Summer Reading Program

For the month of July APS will only be offering the Summer Reading Program at 7 sites Gov. Bent, Hayes, Jimmy Carter, Mark Twain, Rudolfo Anaya, Seven Bar and SR Marmon
