AI Student Procedure

Definition

For purposes of this administrative procedure, “artificial intelligence” (AI) refers to a system of machine learning that is capable of performing complex and original tasks such as problem-solving, learning, reasoning, understanding natural language, and recognizing patterns in data. AI systems use algorithms, data, and computational power to simulate cognitive functions and make autonomous decisions, enabling them to perform a wide range of tasks and improve their performance over time through learning and adaptation that may be used to enhance educational processes and support staff in their responsibilities.

“Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI)” refers to AI systems capable of generating or creating original content, such as text, images, or other media, through learning and adaptation. This includes the incorporation of AI capabilities into a broader suite of technologies, potentially including analytic tools, tools that leverage AI to enhance educational processes, and workflow automation systems.

General Provisions

The purpose of this procedure is to provide Albuquerque Public Schools students and staff with guidance on the responsible use of generative Artificial Intelligence within APS. Effectively incorporating AI in the classroom not only enhances student development but also significantly improves productivity. By introducing innovative methods for skill acquisition and fostering independent exploration, curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving—all within ethical guidelines—AI contributes to a more efficient and productive classroom environment that enhances learning. The ethical and legal use of AI is a privilege granted to students as a supplemental tool to support and expand classroom activities, personalize learning experiences, and increase educational opportunities.

This procedure applies to all APS students who have access to standalone and embedded Generative Artificial Intelligence tools in the classroom, club, or activity.

APS Devices and AI Provisions (Internet Safety)

Internet Safety

The Superintendent or designee shall ensure that all district computers or devices will allow only access to vetted and approved AI tools that have built-in protection measures to protect against access to materials that are obscene, inappropriate, or harmful to minors. The Superintendent or designee, with input from students and appropriate staff, shall regularly review and update procedures to enhance the safety and security of students using AI and to help ensure that the District adapts to changing technologies and circumstances.

Guidelines for Acceptable Use of AI for Students:

Acceptable Use of AI is limited to APS networks/devices and personal use connections, and any use beyond these specified environments is prohibited.

  1. Ensure that any use of AI complies with State and Federal data privacy laws. (FERPA)(20 USC 1232g)(34 CFR Part 99)
  2. Any use of AI in the classroom or on class assignments must align with the teacher's instructions and use expectations.
  3. Do not share confidential information or personally identifiable information of another student, staff member, or other person with the AI system. Personally identifiable information includes, but is not limited to, a person’s name, address, email address, telephone number, Social Security number, or other personally identifiable information.
  4. AI information should not be shared with the intent to threaten, intimidate, harass, or ridicule a person. Using any AI system to access, create, or display harmful or inappropriate matter that is threatening, obscene, disruptive, or sexually explicit, or that could be construed as harassment or disparagement of others based on their race/ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, or political beliefs which interact with the AI in a manner that supports any of the above is prohibited.
  5. Students are encouraged to participate in lessons, activities, and awareness programs that educate them about responsible AI use, ethical considerations, and compliance with relevant laws.
  6. Students are encouraged to report any misuse or concerns related to the use of AI to ensure transparency, accountability, and timely resolution of issues.
  7. Students must adhere to data security protocols when using GAI to protect sensitive information.
  8. All use of GAI must comply with relevant laws, regulations, and Albuquerque Public Schools’ policies.
  9. Students are only approved to use a specific AI platform in the classroom; this includes AI systems that are vetted and approved by the District’s Educational Technology Department or the responsible staff member. [Link to adopted ARC rubric]
  10. Teachers will clarify whether students are prohibited from using AI in an assignment.
  11. Teachers will guide and monitor student use of AI, ensuring that it aligns with the District’s guidelines and policies, including the District’s Acceptable Internet Use Policies.
  12. Use of an AI system must comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. (FERPA)(20 USC 1232g)(34 CFR Part 99)
  13. Any student use of AI on schoolwork must be cited as any other source and may not be submitted as the student’s original work.
  14. Students should not solely rely on AI as a fact-checker to confirm their work or research, as it may not always provide accurate or up-to-date information.
  15. Whenever a student is found to have violated Board Policies or the District’s Acceptable Internet Use Agreement, the principal or designee may cancel or limit a student’s user privileges with respect to their use of AI, as appropriate. Inappropriate use may also result in disciplinary action and/or legal action in accordance with law and APS Board policy.

These guidelines may be updated periodically to reflect changes in technology, legal requirements, or educational best practices. Staff/employees are responsible for staying informed about any updates to ensure continued compliance.
