Kindergarten Registration Checklist

Get the scoop on kindergarten age and immunization requirements, required documents for registration, and how to enroll for kindergarten online with ParentVUE.

Kindergarten Requirements

Age

Children must be 5 years old by September 1 to enroll in kindergarten at APS. New Mexico law requires children of kindergarten age to attend public school, private school, homeschool, or a state institution.

Families who wish to delay kindergarten for one year must request a waiver through the APS Service Center. If approved, the child must enroll in kindergarten the following school year.

Immunizations

To help keep all students healthy and safe, New Mexico law requires students to be up to date on immunizations before starting school. Required vaccines include:

  • Polio
  • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis)
  • MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella)
  • Hepatitis B
  • Varicella (chickenpox)

Families have 30 days after enrollment to provide immunization records. Students who don’t meet immunization requirements within that timeframe may be disenrolled.

Documents

To enroll your kindergartener, please have:
  • Your child’s birth certificate (or other official record)
  • Current immunization records
  • Two proofs of address (such as a driver’s license, utility bill, lease, or bank statement)
  • Online registration completed through ParentVUE

You may also be asked to complete:

  • A kindergarten questionnaire
  • Student health information
  • Home language survey
  • Custody or guardianship documents, if applicable

New to APS

  1. You will need to create a ParentVUE account to register your kindergartener. Review the ParentVUE Registration Instructions
  2. Select registration for the upcoming school year.
  3. Complete all tabs of the registration.
  4. Upload the required documents as prompted.

Returning to APS

  1. You can log into ParentVUE to enroll your kindergartener and add them to your ParentVUE account.
  2. Select registration for the upcoming school year.
  3. Review all of your student's information in each tab, and double-check that your contact information and emergency contacts are up to date.
  4. Upload the required documents as prompted.
