PJ16 Enrollment of Students Affected by Boundary Changes

Enrollment under the One-time Option Rule

In order to decrease the impact of boundary changes on students already attending an Albuquerque Public School, any boundary change shall only affect the lowest incoming grade offered at the school unless otherwise specified in this procedural directive.  During the first year of a boundary change, seventh, eighth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade students already enrolled at the school who are affected by a change in attendance area may be given a one-time option of remaining at the already attended school or moving to the newly assigned school.  This option shall be contingent upon available space or other extenuating circumstances as determined by the superintendent or his/her designee.

Boundary changes involving elementary school students shall become effective with all students affected by the boundary change.    All elementary students shall attend the school assigned to their address.

High school students and their parents/legal guardian ought to contact the school’s Athletic Director to ensure enrollment under the one-time option rule does not affect athletic eligibility.  High school students and their parents/legal guardians shall be responsible for completion of any paperwork required by the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA).

Athletic eligibility shall be affected if the student desires to voluntarily transfer to a different school.  Athletic residency or any other transfer rules shall apply.  Each school athletic director shall assist high school students in determining athletic eligibility.

Process for One-Time Option

Students using the one-time option shall work directly with the affected schools. The previously attended school shall keep record of those who chose to remain at their school and will have their athletic director work with the students to comply with any New Mexico Activities Association eligibility requirements and reporting.
