"Symbol of Safety" Transcript

The school bus is a symbol of safety, now more than ever. As communities work to safely open schools during the pandemic, we’re working hard to make safely transporting your student to school a priority. School bus industry organizations and manufacturers have compiled guidelines and processes to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. It’s all part of an effort to ensure a seamless and safe back-to-school start for students this year.

Here are just a few examples: Drivers may be monitored for symptoms and asked to stay home if necessary or if they’ve been in contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19. Drivers, aides and staff may wear a mask in accordance with state and local guidelines and sanitize their hands throughout the day. More emphasis will be placed on routine and ongoing cleaning and sanitization of high-touch surfaces such as the interior of the bus, handrails and seats. Increased deep cleaning will be considered in the event of COVID-19 exposure. As our drivers and staff do their parts, students and parents can do theirs. Local guidelines regarding mask wearing, hand washing and social distancing should be followed.

If your child is exhibiting symptoms, keep them home or have them tested. But once kids are on the bus, parents can have the confidence that school buses remain one of the safest ways for students to get to school.

Even before COVID-19, school buses were already the most regulated vehicles on the road, built for durability, safety and efficiency. In fact, students are 70 times more likely to get to school safely on a school bus than by car. That’s something to consider when many people may want to drive their kids to school.

Reopening schools requires a team effort. Together, we can make our job of getting students to school both safe and simple.
