Leveling Up: APS Esports Connects, Engages and Empowers Students Across the District

Posted September 10, 2025, 12:43 PM. Updated September 10, 2025, 12:43 PM.

APS Esports launched in 2018 with a vision to create a sustainable, inclusive space where students could learn, lead, and thrive through gaming.

When Albuquerque Public Schools launched its Esports program in 2018, the vision was clear: to create a sustainable, inclusive space where students could learn, lead and thrive—through gaming.

“We started small,” APS Esports District Manager and Technology Budget and Project Supervisor Laurie Lehman said. “Just under 100 students from a handful of high schools signed up that first year. But even then, we could see the potential—because this wasn’t just about gaming. It was about community.”

That sense of community has since blossomed into a districtwide program that now includes all 18 traditional high schools and is steadily expanding into middle and elementary schools. What began as a high school club activity has evolved into a powerful vehicle for student engagement, equity and opportunity at every grade level.

“Esports has become a place where students of all identities and abilities find connection, build confidence and feel a true sense of belonging,” Lehman said. “Many of these students had never been on a team or part of a club. Now they’re thriving—in and out of the game.”

Beyond the Game

The benefits of Esports go far beyond the screen. APS students are seeing improved attendance and academic performance, along with gains in soft skills like communication, collaboration, creativity and analytical thinking. The program fosters social-emotional development while also reinforcing STEM and technology skills that pave the way for college and career success.

In 2023, APS took its commitment a step further with the introduction of an Esports curriculum. The program now blends competitive gaming with academic learning, digital citizenship and 21st-century skill-building.

“Students who weren’t that into school are now excited to participate,” Lehman shared. “Esports helps them find purpose and direction—and even unlocks college and career opportunities.”

Taking It to the Next Level: APS at the NMSU Invitational

Earlier this year, APS teams competed at the NMSU Esports Invitational in Las Cruces, going head-to-head with high schools and universities from across the southwestern U.S. More than 60 APS students represented the district at the event.

At the Career Enrichment Center and Early College Academy, the Valorant team emerged as the highest-placing high school squad. Activities Director and Head Coach Xander Allen said the tournament showcased what makes APS Esports so special.

“The students we brought represent how inclusive APS Esports is,” Allen said. “I have girls, boys and transgender students of all ages, grades and physical abilities competing together on teams."

La Cueva High School’s Esports team also made waves, with an NBA2K player reaching the finals. Program Director Nicholas Romero said the club’s “no cut” policy is key to its success.

“We are super high on inclusion as we have a no cut program that allows all of the kids to come in, be part of a team, compete and connect with others and support them in terms of their of graduation journey,” Romero said. “We have a lot of fun in this class."

Sandia High School Esports Coach Clairessa Ulibarri has been bringing students to the NMSU Invitational for several years—and watching her program grow with each trip.

“My students always have a great time. We become so much closer and the students make so many new friendships that last beyond their high school years,” Ulibarri said. “I am so amazed by their willingness to do well in school and strive for good grades but also dedicating their time to perfect their skills in games and compete to be the best!”

The Future is Bright

APS Esports continues to grow—strategically and sustainably—anchored in its mission to engage, educate and empower students.

“We’re committed to expanding access, building awareness and showing the community just how powerful scholastic Esports can be,” Lehman said. “This isn’t just about playing games. It’s about preparing students for life.”
