Website Filtering

The COVID guidelines below were for the 2020-2021 school year.

Keeping our students safe on the internet

Albuquerque Public Schools wants students to use the most up-to-date technology and learning tools. Just as our schools are required to have a plan for student safety, we must keep our students safe on the Internet.

The district has adopted Iboss, GoGuardian, and Google for Education technology as our filtering solutions. The purpose of these solutions is to block student access to worldwide web network resources that have been deemed inappropriate for K-12.  APS currently provides internet filtering for its schools and has done so for many years.

Today, virtually every APS school has internet access. This technology has brought extraordinary resources for education and research in the classroom; unfortunately, the Internet has become a host to a vast collection of inappropriate websites. While no solution is guaranteed to filter every inappropriate site, the use of filtering software makes access to the Internet by students much safer.

There are many laws that Congress has passed to keep children safe on the Internet: Information on Student Safety and Privacy Legislation

APS is required to adopt and implement an Internet Safety Policy that addresses:

  • Access by minors to inappropriate matter on the Internet
  • The safety and security of minors when using electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of electronic communications
  • Unlawful activities by minors online.
  • Unauthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal information regarding minors
  • Measures designed to restrict minors' access to harmful materials

The Internet is a wonderful educational tool; however, at times, it can be difficult to find the resources you and your students need. Below are some tips on how to safely and efficiently navigate the World Wide Web.

  • Visit the EdTech Webpage for more resources and information to use at home.
  • Teach students to evaluate information on a web site by determining the author and the source.

Go Guardian

GoGuardian Parent is a mobile app to help keep you (parents/guardians) aware of your child(ren)'s activity on school-issued devices and provide you with additional controls during out-of-school hours. GoGuardian Parent is a companion to the internet filtering tools that your child's school uses for devices, using Chrome, issued to students. Through the use of this app, we hope to encourage conversations between parents and children that will result in safer practices and responsible browsing habits.

What is GoGuardian Parent?

GoGuardian Parent was created to help provide additional educational support to administrators and teachers by allowing parents to see what sites and documents their children are browsing and providing parents with additional internet controls at home. The app gives parents an overview of the apps and websites that their kids are on most often, and control over Chromebooks during out-of-school hours. With this tool, parents can see the browsing behavior of their students.

What's the intention of the app?

By providing insight and controls over student browsing activity, our goal is to empower parents to take a more active role in their child(ren)'s online learning. We aim to provide transparency with student browsing to help bring about a greater sense of accountability. We also believe that transparency and insight will increase the likelihood of productive and safe student browsing habits on a more consistent basis.

What's in the app?

  • Top 5 summary of student browsing (apps, extensions, documents, and websites visited)
  • Teacher interventions
  • 30-day view of websites, videos, documents, apps, and extensions
  • Ability to block websites on school-issued devices during out-of-school hours (5pm- 6am)
  • Ability to pause internet access on school-issued devices during out-of-school hours, either on-demand or at a scheduled time.
