APS Extends Remote Learning Through First Semester

In an abundance of caution amid the contagious coronavirus, the Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education voted Wednesday to extend remote learning through the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year.

APS began the school year in mid-August with remote learning, hoping to move to a hybrid model that combines in-person and distance learning after Labor Day. After a lengthy discussion on Wednesday that centered on keeping students and staff safe, the board voted to continue with remote learning at least through the end of December. An exception may be made for students with special needs who require face-to-face services. 

Though the number of COVID-19 cases has decreased across New Mexico in recent days, the board expressed concerns for the safety of students and staff once they return to school buildings since preventive actions that have reduced the virus spread will be difficult to control when students and staff interact in person.  

The board made its decision after hearing from many parents and teachers, including dozens who expressed their concerns during Wednesday's meeting. They also learned the results of an APS survey that found a majority of parents are uncomfortable sending their children back to the classroom. In addition, nearly 5,000 teachers and school staff have requested to work from home due to health concerns for themselves, students, and/or household members. 

Board members also discussed the need to provide consistency for students and families, expressing fears that a return to school could lead to temporary building closures if a student or staff member is infected by the virus. 

What Remote Learning Looks Like 

During remote learning, students have a daily schedule that includes core subject instruction, social-emotional learning, breaks, and time for teachers to reach out to students and their families. The district recommends at least three hours a day of online instruction. Students also have time to complete assignments, practice activities, and seek extra help or guidance.

Students are expected to attend their online classes daily and turn in assignments, just as they would during a more traditional school year. Attendance during remote learning is based on engagement. This could include logging into learning platforms such as Google Meets, See Saw, and Google Classroom. Students also may stay in touch with teachers by phone, email, and chat.

Student work is graded during remote learning. Grading is NOT pass/fail as it was during the spring semester when the coronavirus unexpectedly disrupted the last few weeks of school. 

This school year, student grades will reflect mastery of subject content and completion of coursework. Teachers will keep students and families informed on their progress. Student grades also will be posted to ParentVUE and StudentVUE.
