2025-2026
Story Time in the Park Kickoff
Sunday, June 7, 2026, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
This kickoff event offers free read-aloud sessions, complimentary books, and engaging activities to empower elementary students to become confident readers. All families with children are encouraged to attend.
June 7th kicks off the annual "Story Time in the Park" program — a key initiative designed to help children become better, more confident readers.
By offering free read-aloud sessions, complimentary books and fun activities, this program empowers elementary-aged students to build essential literacy skills, expand their vocabulary, and find a lifelong love for reading before they return to the classroom in the fall. Families will also be given ideas for interactive activities they can do with their kids.
The program, which is specifically geared toward elementary school-aged children but welcomes all members of the family, is partnering with the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County parks. These locations serve as summer lunch meal sites, creating a comprehensive support system for families. The free lunches are available to anyone 18 and younger.
The reading program will run from June 8 through July 17, with sessions scheduled between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Reading activities take place Monday through Thursday, but lunch is served daily Monday through Friday during the same time frame. There will be no program on June 19 to observe Juneteenth, and the program will also be paused during the week of June 29–July 3.
The 17 city and county parks that will host the reading program and provide free lunch are listed on the APS Extended Learning website.
