Taking steps to prepare for college and career makes all APS students eligible to enter a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship. Eleven scholarships will be awarded to students for $1,000 each. Student members of the APS Education Foundation Board of Directors have agreed upon the following criteria to enter a student’s name into the Varsity Award Scholarship Drawing: 

Eligible Applicants

  • A student must be a senior who is graduating in May 2027 from an Albuquerque Public Schools traditional or magnet high school and planning to pursue post-secondary education in the fall of 2027.

Selection Process

  • Students will submit documentation electronically for the activities listed below that they have completed. They will do this by completing the APS Foundation Varsity Scholarship Entry Form, and uploading documentation of completion by March 31, 2027
  • A student’s name can be entered once for each category listed below that they complete. There are ten (10) categories, which means a student who completes each item will receive up to 10 entries.
  • College & Career Counselors will promote the scholarship at least once a month, teach students how to apply and let them know what documentation is acceptable.
  • APS Foundation will announce scholarship winners on the APS and APS Education Foundation websites, and notify their College, and Career Counselor.

4 Complete a Career Assessment Upload a copy of your results and/or career pathway
5 Plan to take and complete an AP test your senior year Acceptable documentation would be a screenshot of your myAP classroom showing you are signed up to take a test or a copy of your receipt for payment
6 Participate in a job shadow, internship/mentorship, or pre-apprenticeship program Examples of documentation would include a copy of an email or letter from the professional you shadowed, worked for or did the pre-apprenticeship with.
7 Pass a Dual Credit Class with a “C” or above You will need to provide a transcript or grade report that shows your final grade
8 Take an ACT, SAT or ACCUPLACER Practice Test Documentation should be a copy of your score report from your practice test
9 Set up a Career Solutions Student account at www.nmcareersolutions.com and complete the “Why I Work” Financial Tool Activity (under the Career Exploration Tab). Documentation required is a screenshot of the completion page
10 Apply for a scholarship (other than this one) Documentation could include an email confirmation of your application or a copy of your completed application

Paul Davis logoAbout the Scholarship

Our goal is to help teachers replenish what personal supplies they may have lost in their classroom due to damage or destruction.

APS teachers may apply up to $250 towards helping students who have worked hard to reach this honor. The scholarship(s) will be awarded throughout the school year on an as-needed basis.

Funding Request Requirements:

Funding requests should be accompanied with a:

  • Please make sure that APS Risk Management receives your property loss prior to submitting your request.
  • Download the Risk Management Property Loss Report (PDF); and/or
  • Photos of damaged items and/or receipts for items lost.

Eligible Applicants

The scholarship(s) will be given teachers who:

  • work for APS traditional and magnet schools; and
  • lost personal teaching supplies in the classroom due to damage or destruction caused by water, mold or other unexpected perils.
  • Funding requests are awarded to the school on behalf of the teacher, and not directly to the teacher.

Funding Criteria

  • Funding requests must be for lost personal teaching supplies in the classroom due to damage or destruction caused by water, mold or other unexpected perils.
  • Items lost due to theft are not eligible for funding.

Nusenda

Nusenda logoAbout the Scholarship

Awards to qualifying EAs shall not exceed $3,500. The EA Scholarship is focused on assisting EAs who are seeking a teacher certification through a higher education plan.

The scholarship is to provide funding to EAs who typically do not qualify for the state-funded program during their student teaching.

Criteria for Funding

The scholarship(s) will be given to Educational Assistants who:

  • Work for APS traditional and magnet schools.
  • Plan to teach for APS after receiving their teaching certificate.
  • Have a need for funding, and do not qualify for the state funding program.

Candidate Qualifications

Candidates for the scholarship, must be currently employed APS Educational Assistants (EAs).

Scholarship Components

The scholarship will support EA 1 and EA 2, online degree programs which include:

  • EA 1 – Approximately two years of higher education and needs at least 60 college credits.
  • EA-2 – Approximately one to one and a half years of higher education and has a bachelor degree but not teaching credentials

Diane Gillen Future Educator Scholarship Award

This scholarship honors Diane Gillen, a dedicated APS teacher for 20 years who inspired countless students and colleagues. She taught at Sandia, Manzano, Del Norte, and La Cueva High Schools and was known for her passion for education, love of reading and lifelong learning.

Award Amount: $500 -$1,500 (one recipient annually)

Eligible Applicants

  • Graduating senior from an APS traditional high school
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Intent to attend a four-year college or university
  • Strong interest in pursuing a career in education
  • Financial need may be considered but is not required

Selection Process

  • Complete the application provided by the scholarship donor
  • Submit the application to your school’s College and Career counselor
  • Finalists will be reviewed by a panel of retired APS educators

Deadline: Applications are due in March/April. Recipients will be notified before graduation and recognized at their school’s honors assembly.

Tillery McNerney Scholarship

Tillery McNerney ScholarshipAbout the Scholarship

In 2024, the Tillery McNerney Scholarship was established by Marvin and Patricia Tillery in partnership with the Albuquerque Public Schools Foundation. Award Amount is $5,000 to one graduate annually.

Eligible Applicants

  • The Tillery McNerney Scholarship will be available for graduating students at APS's thirteen traditional high schools and magnet/alternative schools.
  • The scholarship(s) will be given to students who have the intent to move on to an education beyond high school and into college.
  • The scholarship(s) are for a student(s) who has demonstrated a commitment to school and has a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

Selection Process

  • The scholarship recipient(s) will be selected through an application process. Students must use the application provided by the scholarship donor. All applications will be reviewed by a member of the donor’s family. College and Career Counselors will promote the scholarship at least once a month, guide students through the application process, and inform them about the required documentation.

Deadline: Applications are due in March/April. Recipients will be notified before graduation and recognized at their school’s honors assembly.
