Board of Education Officers September 2018 Revision

Election of Officers

Officers shall be elected as follows:

  • Nominations and elections shall be conducted at the first Regular Board meeting held in January.  The vote for officers shall be conducted by public vote.
  • Should a board officer resign or be removed during his or her term of office, the Board of Education, at its next meeting following the resignation or removal, shall hold an election to fill the vacated position.

Officers 

The board shall elect from among its members a president, vice president, and secretary.  Other board officers may from time-to-time be elected or appointed.  No member shall hold more than one board office.

President

The President shall:

  • Preside at meetings of the board and perform other duties that pertain to the office of president
  • Coordinate the board’s activities
  • Provide input to the superintendent regarding the staff in the Board of Education Services Office
  • Sign, or cause to be signed, all resolutions, contracts, and other instruments and documents authorized by the board
  • The president may not act for, or on behalf of the board, without prior specific authority from a majority of the board
    • Ensure agenda preparation for board meetings
    • Approve board business that represents consensus of the Board of Education

Vice President 

The Vice President shall:

  • Perform the duties of the president in the absence of the president and shall perform any other duties delegated by the president
  • Preside during board member discussion/debates when the president is actively engaged in the discussion/debate
  • In absence of the secretary, sign, or cause to be signed, all resolutions, contracts, and other instruments and documents authorized by the board and when the secretary’s signature is required
    • Perform other duties as delegated by the president

Secretary 

The Secretary shall:

  • Preside, in the absence of the president and vice president, at board meetings.
  • Sign, or cause to be signed, all resolutions, contracts, and other instruments and documents authorized by the board and when the secretary’s signature is required
    • Facilitate recognitions
    • Conduct the public forum segment of the board meeting
    • Perform other duties as delegated by the president

Other Duties

All officers shall perform other duties as the president or the board may prescribe.

Term of Office

The term of office for all officers shall be one year.  Officers may serve successive terms of office.

Resignation of Officers 

Any officer may resign from his or her position at any time by giving written notice to the president of the board or the Executive Committee if the president asks to resign.  The board shall accept the resignation.   

Removal of Officers

Any officer may be removed from his or her position in a public vote of at least five board members.      

Executive Committee

The executive committee shall include the president, vice president and secretary of the Board of Education.
