6 Semifinalists Selected for Superintendent Job

The APS Board of Education will conduct interviews on Feb. 2, 4 and 5.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education selected six semifinalists to interview for the superintendent’s job. Interviews are slated for Feb. 2, 4, and 5. The Board plans to name finalists for the job on Feb. 5 following the interviews.

The six semifinalists include three who were selected before the pandemic, Interim Superintendent Scott Elder, and two others who applied when the search resumed in November.

Finalists will be interviewed a second time in mid-March by Board members and will have an opportunity to respond to community questions in a public forum context, probably through Zoom meetings similar to how the Board has been holding its meetings during the pandemic.

The community will have an opportunity beforehand to submit potential questions for the finalists during the public forum.

"We are committed to working around the pandemic's challenges to make this process as public and transparent as possible," said APS Board President Dr. David Peercy.

The Board hopes to announce the new superintendent by mid-to-late March and have that person assume the job on July 1.

The job will be even more challenging as the district prepares to reopen schools to all students, return to some semblance of normalcy, and resume the teaching and learning pace practiced prior to the pandemic.

Information about the superintendent search, including a general timeline, is posted to the APS Superintendent Search website and will be updated as necessary when any changes are made.
