Our goals for meeting the challenges of public education in Albuquerque

The 8 Goals

Improving student achievement!

Vision

APS partners with families and communities to support great schools and great employees so that all students can learn

Mission

APS is committed to achieving academic excellence, creating quality, safe learning environments, and ensuring effective and efficient operations.

Goals

  1. The district is in its second year of a three-year academic plan that includes measurable targets for improving student achievement, narrowing the achievement gap, increasing graduation rates and improving attendance and truancy rates.
  2. The district has begun to implement a plan to change the perception and build confidence in the Albuquerque Public Schools by building relationships among the board, superintendent, district staff and stakeholders in the Albuquerque community.
  3. The district has developed and is beginning implementation of a comprehensive internal and external communication plan with an evaluation component that involves the community.
  4. The APS Board of Education has begun a series of facilitated training sessions by nationally known experts. The training focuses on the role and responsibilities of effective school boards and superintendents. The training, which is continuing, has assisted and focused the Board of Education and district staff on raising student achievement and creating a more ‘student focused’ organization.
  5. The district has reviewed and evaluated plans, and is in the process of enhancing these plans to upgrade and maintain facilities to support student achievement. A capital election is planned for February 2010.
  6. Maintain transparent, sound and effective financial stewardship with clearly defined, consistent and well documented processes throughout the district. Reviews and modifications are ongoing.
  7. The district has begun implementation of a plan to transition APS from site-based management to district-based management for equitable distribution of resources.
  8. The district has enhanced the school and district crisis plans, to include safety and prevention plans. Evaluation and modification of plans are ongoing.
