Tome-Warito Honored at 4th Annual Accessibility Awards
APS Board President recognized for her work at the intersection of disability rights and Native American advocacy.
Disability Pride New Mexico has named Albuquerque Public School Board President Ronalda Tome-Warito as the recipient of its Accessibility in Native American Communities Award, recognizing her outstanding dedication to inclusion and equity.
The honor was presented during the 4th annual Accessibility Awards on Thursday, July 30, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The ceremony celebrated individuals and organizations whose work has left a lasting impact on accessibility throughout the state.
"Disability Pride New Mexico is excited to recognize those who have made a significant impact on inclusion within our community," the organization said in a statement. Tome-Warito’s work specifically highlights the critical intersection of disability rights and Native American community advocacy.
Tome-Warito made history when she was sworn in as an APS Board of Education member on Jan. 3, 2024, becoming the first Native American to serve in that position at APS. She was elected board president this year.
An educational consultant and longtime advocate for children with disabilities and Native students, Tome-Warito has a deep appreciation for the value of public education and the diverse experiences it offers to students.
