Celebrate National Walk to School Month With APS

Throughout October, students at eight schools will embark on a designated walk through their neighborhood to promote pedestrian safety.

Albuquerque Public Schools is marking the arrival of National Walk to School Month, or WALKTOBER, with communities mobilizing for student health and pedestrian safety.

Throughout October, students, staff and community members at eight schools will come together for a morning or afternoon of fun, education and exercise as they embark on a designated walk through their neighborhood to promote pedestrian safety and the numerous benefits of walking to school.

Walking to school benefits a healthier lifestyle, encourages community engagement, reduces traffic congestion around the school, and decreases the carbon footprint. This event exemplifies APS’s commitment to the well-being of its students and the environment. 

The walk will follow a designated route within the neighborhood surrounding each school. Students will be accompanied by teachers, staff and parent volunteers, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. Throughout the walk, students can learn and practice important pedestrian safety tips, helping them become responsible and aware walkers.

All participating students and staff will receive exclusive APS T-shirts and visibility ribbons to make the event even more special. These items are tokens of the day’s significance and a reminder of pedestrian safety.

• Montezuma Elementary: Thursday, Oct. 1, 2:30-3:45 p.m.
• Emerson Elementary: Friday, Oct. 2; Session 1: 2-2:50 p.m.; Session 2: 3:05-3:50 p.m.
• Los Ranchos Elementary and Taylor Middle Joint Event: Wednesday, Oct. 14: 9:30-10:45 a.m.; Begin in Los Ranchos Elementary School Gym at 9:30 a.m.
• Kirtland Elementary: Friday, Oct. 16, 2:30-3:30 p.m.
• La Mesa Elementary: Event 1: Thursday, Oct. 22, 8:30-9:30 a.m.
• Inez Elementary: Friday, Oct. 23, 2-3 p.m.
• Lowell Elementary: Tuesday, Oct. 27, 9:15-10:15 a.m.
