APS Wraps Up Summer Meals, Looks Ahead to Fresh New School Year
Nearly 300,000 meals served this summer as Food & Nutrition Services prepares new menu offerings for students.
As Albuquerque Public Schools welcomes students back for the 2026-2027 school year, the district's Food & Nutrition Services team is celebrating another successful summer of keeping children nourished while preparing exciting new menu offerings for the months ahead.
This summer, APS served more than 295,000 breakfast and lunch meals through summer school sites and community meal locations in partnership with the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. Along the way, our famous goldbars even made an appearance.
"Our summer meals program is only successful because of the incredible support from our staff, community partners and families," APS Executive Director of Food & Nutrition Services Marie Johnson said. "Thank you to everyone who helped ensure children had access to healthy meals all summer long."
Now, as students return to classrooms, APS will once again provide free breakfast and lunch to every student through New Mexico's Healthy Universal School Meals program.
This school year, students will see an even greater focus on fresh, scratch-made meals, locally sourced ingredients whenever possible and culturally relevant menu options that celebrate the diverse communities APS serves.
Across the district's Central Kitchen and 142 school culinary centers, Food & Nutrition Services staff prepare thousands of meals each day to support student health, well-being and academic success.
"Healthy meals help students stay focused, energized and ready to learn," Johnson said. "We encourage every student to take advantage of the nutritious breakfast and lunch options available at school each day. We're honored to serve our students and look forward to another great school year."
