Eldorado and La Cueva High Schools recognized among the nation’s best in leadership, academics and service.

Two Albuquerque Public Schools Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps programs have been named Naval Honor Schools by the Commanding General of Marine Corps Training and Education Command. The designation places Eldorado and La Cueva high schools among the top programs in the country.

La Cueva High School MCJROTC, led by Gunnery Sgt. Oliver Rodriguez, has averaged 75 cadets each year for the past three years. Cadets have competed in drill competitions, academic bowls, marksmanship contests, Cyber Patriot, Stellar Xplorer and physical fitness challenges in multiple states.

“I am incredibly proud of the cadets in the program,” Rodriguez said. “I hope they become better citizens, students and dedicate themselves to being unselfish and always helping others in their community.”

Eldorado High School MCJROTC, with 78 cadets under the leadership of Maj. Jim Koerber, has earned the Naval Honor School designation multiple times. Eldorado’s program emphasizes leadership, respect, teamwork and academic success while participating in a range of activities including community service, color guards and national-level competitions.

“What we hope all of our students get out of our program is to develop leadership skills, treat others with respect and dignity, think before they speak, keep their priorities in order and have fun while learning to work as a team,” Koerber said.

The Naval Honor School designation reflects the dedication and hard work of both programs’ cadets and instructors. Through competitions, community service and leadership development, these units prepare students to excel in school, contribute to their communities and succeed in whatever path they choose after graduation.
