Posted August 22, 2025, 1:20 PM. Updated August 27, 2025, 11:37 AM.

APS leaders will talk about progress and vision at event.

The leaders of Albuquerque Public Schools will talk about momentum, commitment and steady progress toward reaching its goals at the second annual State of the District event, scheduled for Aug. 26 at 8:30 a.m. at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center.

Hosted by the Board of Education, the State of the District will include remarks by Superintendent Gabriella Blakey and board President Danielle Gonzales. Also speaking is Dr. Michael Richards, executive vice president for the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.

In addition, the event will feature student emcees, musical performances and a “fireside chat” with questions from students for Superintendent Blakey and Board President Gonzales.

The inaugural State of the District event drew a standing room-only crowd to the Berna Facio Center a year ago as Dr. Blakey talked about her vision for the district in her first year. Her Year 2 address will center on key initiatives the district will pursue this year, plus its push to continue the progress toward goals and guardrails set by the board.

“Though we’ve spoken about some of these topics to our educators and administrators at other events just before school started, State of the District gives us the opportunity to reach out to our communities throughout the city,” Dr. Blakey said. “I hope people will come to get a sense of the work that’s being accomplished – and see some of the students and employees we’re all so proud of.”
