Public Invited to Review Science Textbooks
Teachers and members of the school community are invited to review and give input on proposed high-quality instructional materials for middle and high school students.
Albuquerque Public Schools is reviewing science textbooks for students in grades 6-12 and wants your feedback.
The district plans to purchase textbooks that are culturally and linguistically relevant and that provide rich, diverse and engaging content.
Parents, guardians, family members, employees, teachers, students and community members are invited to review the textbooks being considered.
Dates and Location for textbook review
Dates: The materials are available for review until Sept. 30
Location: They are available at the LSIM Training Library, Building O, 930 Oak St SE. Because the space being used for the review materials is an active training/meeting space, please contact Rachel Altobelli (rachel.altobelli@aps.edu) to set up a time to view materials.

Narrowing the options
APS is looking for materials that will work well for teachers as they provide appropriate scaffolds to help all students achieve grade-level mastery of rigorous standards.
The district is seeking community input to help identify the two strongest programs for students in grades 6-12. Then, based on ongoing input from current science educators, the final part of this review process will take place at each school, through its Instructional Council. This will allow each school community to make the best recommendation for its specific school community, and will provide more local opportunities for educator and community review.
Multiple APS departments are working on this review, including:
- Teaching and Learning
- Educational Technology
- Language and Cultural Equity
- Special Education
- Indian Education
- Library Services and Instructional Materials
- Office of Equity and Engagement.
These departments, along with the Albuquerque Teachers Federation and APS teachers, are using tools such as the reviews done by the New Mexico Public Education Department and EdReports, and are also considering factors such as:
- Organization
- The role of student choice
- How standards are supported
- Availability of digital accessibility tools
- Support for culturally and linguistically responsive teaching and learning
- Affirmation for all students
- Embedded support for students in Special Education
- Embedded support for students who are English Learners.
The process is aligned with the APS Board of Education Goals and Guardrails.
