Petroglyph Elementary Celebrates 'Turquoise' Ribbon Distinction
APS honors school's excellence after the National Blue Ribbon program is discontinued.
After Petroglyph Elementary School was selected as a 2025–2026 National Blue Ribbon School, Albuquerque Public Schools learned that the U.S. Department of Education had ended the federal recognition program, which had honored exemplary schools for more than 40 years. The announcement arrived shortly after Petroglyph’s selection, leaving no national avenue to acknowledge the school’s accomplishment—even though it had earned this distinction through exceptional academics, a strong school culture, and a deep commitment to students and families.
To ensure the school’s work was honored, Albuquerque Public Schools created its own “Turquoise Ribbon” distinction, drawing from Petroglyph’s school color as a symbol of its strength and pride. This local honor celebrates the achievement, dedication, and excellence that set Petroglyph among the best schools in the country.
“Petroglyph earned this distinction through years of focused work, strong relationships, and a deep commitment to students,” said APS Superintendent Gabriella Blakey. “Even with the national program concluded, their excellence deserves to be seen and celebrated. The Turquoise Ribbon is our way of honoring a school that represents the very best of Albuquerque Public Schools.”
Founded in 1992 and named for the nearby Petroglyph National Monument, the school reflects Albuquerque’s cultural richness and community spirit. Petroglyph is built on a culture of respect, belonging, and care. Every student learns the value of effort, empathy, and responsibility. The school’s MACAW expectations—Manners, Achieve, Cooperate, Act with Compassion, make Wise decisions, and practice Safety—shape how students learn, interact, and contribute to the life of the school.
Inside the classrooms, students lead discussions, explore hands-on STEAM projects, and monitor their own academic progress. Teachers use creativity, collaboration, and data to personalize learning and support every child. Petroglyph’s two STEAM academies, Makerspace labs, and emphasis on innovation have helped students become problem solvers and critical thinkers prepared for the future.
Relationships are at the heart of Petroglyph’s success. Teachers, educational assistants, and counselors work closely together to support each child’s academic and emotional growth. Staff collaborate regularly to review data, share strategies, and create plans tailored to student needs. Families are active partners through events such as literacy and math nights, performances, and community gatherings that strengthen connections between home and school.
Petroglyph’s positive environment is immediately apparent. Visitors sense the warmth and pride that define the campus—the laughter in classrooms, the support among teachers, and the trust between students and staff. It is a place where safety, kindness, and achievement go hand in hand.
“I am very proud of our school, and I am proud of our students, staff and families,” said Principal Kristina Romo. “I am proud that our excellence is being recognized and that all of the hard work that has been put into place over the years is now celebrated! Thank you, Albuquerque Public Schools, for still recognizing Petroglyph Elementary as the high-achieving, student-centered, HAPPY elementary school that it is. Petroglyph Elementary is truly a great place to be!”
Although the national program has ended, the excellence at Petroglyph Elementary continues to shine. The Turquoise Ribbon serves as a local recognition of a school that embodies the very best of Albuquerque.
