Nine APS Schools Exit 'CSI' and 'MRI' Intensive Oversight

Posted November 12, 2025, 2:10 PM. Updated November 14, 2025, 9:37 AM.

New designations released by state Public Education Department this week.

Nine schools previously classified as CSI and MRI by the state Public Education Department because they needed more intensive support have exited the designation, according to the latest data released by the state Public Education Department on Wednesday.

“These schools improved enough that they no longer require intensive oversight,” Superintendent Gabriella Blakey said. “We’re proud of the staff and students at each of these schools for their hard work and for moving the needle on academic performance.”

“CSI” refers to Comprehensive Support and Improvement schools, while "MRI" denotes More Rigorous Intervention schools, which are CSI schools that require more forceful interventions due to not having exited their status.

APS schools that exited MRI or CSI status and are now classified as Traditional schools are:

  • Armijo Elementary
  • Ernie Pyle Middle School
  • Jefferson Middle School
  • Jimmy Carter Middle School
  • John Adams Middle School
  • Kit Carson Elementary
  • Lavaland Elementary
  • Pajarito Elementary
  • And Sombra del Monte Elementary

The Traditional classification is used for schools in good standing.

Three additional APS schools improved their designations.

Barcelona Elementary transitioned from a CSI school to a Targeted Support and Improvement school, indicating that it continues to require support to improve proficiency rates for specific student groups. Barcelona saw growth in reading for English Learners, but historically low performance in reading and math for Students with Disabilities.

Emerson Elementary also transitioned from a CSI school to a TSI school. The school saw overall growth in reading, but historically low performance in math for Hispanic students.

Manzano Mesa Elementary, meanwhile, went from a Traditional school to a Spotlight school, a designation awarded to schools in the top 25% of schools statewide.

The new designations are based on student performance from the 2024-2025 school year.
