JDC Student Secures National Victory in BreakFree Contest
Tenth grader's ‘visually stunning’ jersey and analytical essay outshine competition.
A 10th-grade student at APS Juvenile Detention Center has earned national recognition after taking first place in the BreakFree March Madness Dream Team Contest.
BreakFree Education is an organization providing educational resources and opportunities in juvenile justice facilities. His entry impressed judges with a submission that combined both creativity and analytical thinking. His custom jersey design was described as “visually stunning”, capturing attention with its bold style. However, it was his written component that truly set him apart.
In his essay, he thoughtfully broke down player statistics while offering clear, well-reasoned explanations for each of his selections. Judges noted that he demonstrated a deep understanding of the game, carefully explaining why his chosen players would complement one another and function as a cohesive, high-performing team.
The judges wrote, “...we loved reading your written explanation. From the player statistics and plays you highlighted, your basketball knowledge and passion really come through. We also thought your jersey design was creative. We love that the serpent weaves in and through the player's jersey number. Great job on your work and Congratulations!”
The nationwide contest challenged students to think like coaches and designers, blending research and writing skills with creativity. His ability to excel in all three areas secured him the top spot. His jersey design is displayed on the BreakFree website.
Two other students at JDC, a 12th grader and a 9th grader, were also recognized for their essay component of the competition.
