Albuquerque Public Schools is holding an informational session later this month for community members who want to learn more about effective school board governance.

The event will be held on July 30 from 5:30-7 p.m. at City Center, 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE. It also  will be live-streamed on YouTube.

The Board of Education’s Executive Committee – President Danielle Gonzales, Vice President Courtney Jackson and Secretary Janelle Astorga – will be the conversation facilitators. A variety of key basics will be discussed, focused on three key questions: Why does APS exist? Why do school boards exist? How must a school board act to be effective?

School board elections will be held in November in Districts 3, 5, 6 and 7.

A candidate orientation is planned for Aug. 12 and will include details about being a board member. Newly elected members are expected to attend state-required trainings and an APS onboarding process.

Please note: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported the July 30 event is for prospective board members. All members of the community are welcome to attend.
