Eisenhower student takes third place.

Eliza Sprinkle, a student at Eisenhower Middle School, took third place at the New Mexico State Civics Bee competition held on June 13 in Albuquerque.

The state competition, held at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center, featured top students from across the state. Sprinkle was one of five students to advance to Round 3, which involved public speaking and a question-and-answer segment with judges. She received a $250 check for her third-place finish.

The event was held in partnership with the New Mexico Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Albuquerque Public Schools.

The National Civics Bee is an annual initiative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation that invites students in grades 6-8 to dive into civics and make a difference in their communities. Through this competition, finalists not only vie for prizes but also hone their writing, public speaking and civic knowledge while building connections with peers

To qualify to compete in the Civics Bee, students submit a 4-paragraph essay identifying a specific opportunity, problem, or challenge in their community, describe the steps they’d take to make a change, find support to help bring their idea to life and connect their idea to the values that shaped our country. Judges across the nation review the essays and select 20 to compete in regional competitions.

Sprinkle’s essay on driver safety and the license renewal quiz qualified her for the Regional Civics Bee competition. She was one of four APS students who competed at regionals, where she placed second.
