APS Offering Free Summer Reading Program for K-8 Students
It's one of several learning opportunities available for students this summer.
Albuquerque Public Schools has partnered with the State Public Education Department to offer a free and comprehensive summer reading program aimed at boosting literacy for all students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
This high-impact opportunity is designed to help students who may be struggling to get caught up, while also providing focused instruction for those who want to get further ahead in their reading skills. It's one of several summer learning programs available to APS students.
The NMPED/APS Summer Reading Program offers structured literacy instruction in small groups, maintaining a ratio of four students to one instructor. This focused approach ensures students receive the attention necessary to enhance their literacy, track progress and gain the confidence needed to succeed in all school subjects.
The program runs Monday through Friday, from June 8 to July 17, 2026, with no program on June 19 or the week of June 29 through July 3. Instruction takes place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
To ensure accessibility, APS will provide free transportation, breakfast and lunch to all participating students. Additionally, free Out-of-School Time will be provided at all sites from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m..
The program will be hosted at more than a dozen elementary and middle schools:
- Alamosa Elementary School
- Arroyo del Oso Elementary School
