State of the District Slated for Wednesday

Posted August 26, 2024, 3:45 PM. Updated August 28, 2024, 12:32 PM.

Superintendent Blakey to deliver assessment of district's strengths and weaknesses and outline a path forward.

Fifty-nine days into her tenure as the new superintendent of Albuquerque Public Schools, Dr. Gabriella Blakey will delve into what’s going well at APS, where the district is struggling, and the path forward as the district works to improve outcomes for all students.

The inaugural State of the District event will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Berna Facio Professional Development Complex, 3315 Louisiana Blvd. NE. It is free and open to the public, and members of the APS Board of Education are actively inviting everyone to attend.

“Our new Superintendent, Dr. Gabriella Blakey, will provide an honest and clear overview of APS, which will both celebrate our successes and address our challenges and also lay out the path to improve student outcomes,” said Board President Danielle Gonzales. “This groundbreaking event marks the beginning of an exciting new trajectory for our students and families, and I hope everyone can attend.”

Dr. Blakey’s State of the District address comes amid a renewed push to improve academic outcomes for all students. A year ago, APS held a summit during which it unveiled its Emerging Stronger strategic plan for achieving the four five-year goals adopted by the Board in early 2023. The goals, established in collaboration with the community, are:

  • Improving reading and math proficiency rates
  • Preparing students for life after graduation
  • And equipping them with the life skills they need to be successful.

Since stepping in as superintendent on July 1, Dr. Blakey has taken several steps to better position APS to meet the goals. Those actions include an administrative reorganization and working with her team to tweak the strategic plan.

The State of the District will be live-streamed on the Board of Education's YouTube channel.
