Desert Ridge Middle School nurse recognized for exceptional care, leadership, and unwavering commitment to student well-being.

On National School Nurse Day, Albuquerque Public Schools proudly celebrates the heart and skill behind school health care: our dedicated nurses. This year, we are honored to recognize Kristin Grenemeyer, school nurse at Desert Ridge Middle School, as the APS School Nurse of the Year.

Grenemeyer’s commitment to student well-being is evident in every corner of the school. Whether administering daily medications, maintaining confidentiality or providing personalized care for students with complex medical needs, Grenemeyer ensures no detail is overlooked. Her deep knowledge of school health, special education requirements and IEPs allows her to provide tailored support for students—and critical training for the staff who work with them.

“Kristin Grenemeyer knows all the students, their medical needs, medical conditions, their services provided at school,” one nominator wrote. “Our school is lucky to have Kristin.”

Colleagues describe her as a problem-solver with a calm, capable presence. Grenemeyer doesn’t just support students—she supports the whole school community. She adapts her training methods to meet the learning styles of staff, building their confidence and competence to meet students’ needs safely.

“Kristin is a strong, knowledgeable, compassionate and down-to-earth leader,” another colleague shared. “Our school would be lost without her.”

APS Senior Director of Nursing Services Dr. Cheryl R. Brubaker captured the impact of school nurses perfectly: “Our school nurses are indispensable!”
