APS Cadets Aim for National Marksmanship Title
Eldorado's JROTC team qualifies for nationals, with five individual APS cadets from Del Norte, Highland, West Mesa and La Cueva also advancing.
Several Albuquerque Public Schools JROTC cadets are heading to the national stage.
They will compete in the JROTC National Marksmanship Championship in Camp Perry, Ohio, March 20-22.
Eldorado High School's Marine JROTC team secured a coveted spot in the national competition, the only New Mexico team to qualify. The team includes Haylie Garcia, Rhiannon Moore, Carter Paas and Jamie Spoonamore.
“They work hard. Theyre here at zero six hundred every morning practicing,” said Major James Koerber, who coaches the team.
He noted that the Eldorado team has competed at nationals 16 of the last 19 years and took second last year.
Five additional APS students qualified individually.
Del Norte High School's Space Force JROTC will be represented by Cadet Lt. Col. Carlos Zamaripa and Cadet Maj. Keith Stone, who advanced from the Service Championships in Anniston, Alabama.
Individual qualifiers also include Emily Schmidt (La Cueva's Marine JROTC), Makayla Lovato (Highland High School's Navy JROTC) and Erick Trujillo (West Mesa's Navy JROTC).
