APS is Expanding Access to Paper's Tutoring Services

Posted December 12, 2023, 4:10 PM. Updated June 29, 2024, 2:02 PM.

Students can access unlimited tutoring 24/7 with parental consent.

Albuquerque Public Schools students in third through twelfth grade now have access to unlimited 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week tutoring through Paper, but parents will need to opt into the service.

The virtual sessions encompass everything from personalized tutoring and writing assignment reviews to college and career support for students. The service, which is chat and voice-based, is free for all APS students.

“We’re thrilled to be able to offer this to our students,” Superintendent Scott Elder said. “We know many of our kids lost ground during the pandemic, and we are committed to doing everything we can to help them catch up. Other students are trying to get ahead. Making unlimited tutoring available to students will go a long way toward improving outcomes for all students.”

APS is using federal pandemic emergency relief funds to cover the cost of the free tutoring. Paper has been providing tutoring to APS students since April, but up until recently, those sessions have only been available during school hours.

The parental permission process for students to access the 24/7 live tutor service at Paper Education is designed to ensure a seamless and secure experience for both students and their parents or guardians. (More information on that process can be found below.)

Live tutoring in any subject will now be available 24/7 in English, Spanish, French, and Mandarin, and tutors supporting those languages are fluent speakers. There are no translation services used. Students can also submit written files to the Review Center for help with essays, thesis statements, lab reports, resumes, and more. Tutors work individually with students to help them master concepts, improve their writing, and facilitate the completion of their coursework through Paper’s secure chat-based platform.

Once a parent or guardian has opted into the 24/7 tutoring, students will be able to login through Classlink. Go to my.aps.edu and click the Paper icon.

Paper has additional tools available for students:

  • Paper Missions offers interactive missions for students to refine their math and vocabulary skills, ensuring they assimilate new knowledge while building self-assurance — all at their own pace.
  • Paper Reading listens to students as they read aloud, offering immediate and actionable feedback along with progress monitoring.
  • Career and College Readiness allows students to explore diverse careers, prepare for their futures, secure micro-credentials, research academic institutions, and more. It's an all-encompassing tool, ensuring every student is poised for success, be it in higher education, the military, professional certifications, or the workforce.

Paper partners with hundreds of school districts nationwide. Students are able to access the platform via any device and receive multilingual tutoring and instruction across subjects in English, Spanish, and other languages.

To date, APS students have completed nearly 86,240 learning activities through Paper. Paper’s tutors have provided over 1,825 hours of help, and nearly 900 hours have been dedicated to reviewing students' written work. This not only saves teachers’ time but also significantly reduces the financial burden on families given that the average cost of private tutoring is $20 an hour.

Paper has drawn praise from APS educators since the district began offering it in April.

“I love Paper! It is incredibly user-friendly for teachers and students, offering a fantastic new resource for my students to get help whenever they need it,” says Michele Dean, a special education math teacher at Del Norte High School.

"Paper is perfect for our school,” adds Sandra Krivanek, another Del Norte teacher. “It offers a safe, non-judgmental space for students to receive help and feedback, especially for those who may not always know how to ask for it."

TO OPT INTO THE FREE SERVICE: Upon logging into ParentVue, parents can generate a parental acknowledgment that grants their students access to Paper Education's Live Chat tutoring services. This acknowledgment is available in seven languages. Alternatively, parents or guardians can visit any of their children's schools, where they can log into their ParentVue account or sign a paper copy of the acknowledgment, presenting identification for verification purposes. Paper's live tutoring will be available in a week or less after verified acknowledgment.
