APS Recognizes its 2014 Athletes of the Year

Kurt Henry of Albuquerque High and Nick Martinez of La Cueva are named coaches of the year.

Volcano Vista High School hosted the annual Albuquerque Public Schools Athletes and Coaches of the Year ceremony Monday, recognizing a male and female nominee from each school as well as a male sport and female sport coach of the year. Athletes are recognized for their athletic, academic and community service accomplishments.

The male sport coach of the year is Kurt Henry, Albuquerque High track and field coach.

The female sport coach of the year is Nick Martinez, the La Cueva cross country coach.

The male athlete of the year is Mike Budick of Volcano Vista. He is a football player, wrestler and track and field thrower for the Falcons.

The female athletes of the year are soccer and basketball player Hannah Frenske of Volcano Vista and Kim Chapman of Cibola who ran cross country and track and field and also plays basketball.

The APS female athletes of the year nominees are:

RGHS: Jenneva Lujan - soccer, basketball

SHS: Alayna Latimore - cross country, basketball, track & field

VHS: Korina Grajeda - volleyball

VVHS: Hannah Fenske - soccer & basketball

WMHS: Donna Garcia - volleyball, basketball, softball
