A group of 4th and 5th-grade students at Zia Elementary School are making a difference for both people and pets in the community.

Partnering with Animal Humane New Mexico through its Paws on the Ground program, students organized a donation drive to support individuals experiencing homelessness who care for companion animals.

“Our team wanted to do something to prevent animal cruelty,” said fifth grader Hugo. “One way to do that is to help people who are struggling to take care of their pets.”

Through their research, students learned that an estimated 150 to 300 people experiencing homelessness in Albuquerque have a dog or other companion animal. Inspired to help, they worked with community partners, including Clark's Pet Emporium and Boofy's, to collect donations.

“Altogether we collected 130 items including dog beds, blankets, dog food, treats and leashes to help homeless people care for their pets through the winter,” said fifth grader Ayla.

Their efforts made a meaningful impact. Animal Humane educator Savannah Olivas said the students made “an incredible difference in the lives of the pets served through our Paws on the Ground program.”

Through compassion, research and action, these Zia Elementary students are showing how young people can make a positive impact in their community.
