Volcano Vista Students Bring Home National Titles from TSA Competition

Posted July 9, 2025, 9:25 AM. Updated July 9, 2025, 9:27 AM.

The only APS school to compete at the national level earns first- and second-place awards.

Twelve students from Volcano Vista High School represented Albuquerque Public Schools and New Mexico at the Technology Student Association (TSA) National Conference in Nashville, Tennessee—and they didn’t come home empty-handed.

Two Volcano Vista teams earned top honors in their respective events, making school and district history.

National Champions: STEM Mass Media
Luke Beck, Wiley Billingsley and Mia Lucero-Cisneros placed first in the STEM Mass Media event. This is a brand-new event at the national level, making them the first-ever National Champions in this category. The event required students to produce a pre-submitted video news story based on a national prompt. After being named semifinalists, the team attended a mock press conference and had 24 hours to write a stylized 500-word article.

Second Place: Promotional Design
Mia Lucero-Cisneros also earned second place in Promotional Design, submitting a full marketing design package for a fictional restaurant. As a semifinalist, she was given an onsite prompt and just two hours to create three new designs under the watchful eye of judges.

“To say we are proud of these students is an understatement,” said Lindsey Allen, Volcano Vista computer graphics and crafts teacher and TSA advisor.

Volcano Vista High School is currently the only APS school competing at the national level in TSA, making this achievement even more notable.

Congratulations to our Hawks!
